Birch #9 is a work that is part of a series entitled “Every tribal chief needs his own totem tree “. Acrylic on linen canvas, size 40 x 60 cm by 2cm deep and depicts, like suggests the title, a detail of the trunk e of the branches of a Birch. The painting was made on a linen canvas raw, without preparation, to further accentuate the contrast with the colored details of the plants. The line is outlined from edge to ink black, which highlights the line. They are unique pieces belonging to a series in line with the artist’s ideas “I like to paint trees and plants rather than animals or people precisely because of the energy I draw from it and then because I have more freedom, even of movement.”

Excerpts from the technical interview with Sophie Mühlmann:

“I started the cycle with a yellow magnolia, me inspired after dreaming of it .. I dream a lot! At first I used fluorescent colors more, then slowly I abandoned that experimentation, the desire to transmit energy through colors so bright. I would like the public to wonder about symbology by observing them of the plants that I portray, because obviously a olive tree and a jasmine have different values. “

“In the case of a commission, I present the work who commissioned me to customize the final choice, after which I work on the canvas. I start by drawing with the pencil, so I can correct, trying to keep the proportions or harmonies that I had given on the sketch, maybe adding or removing something, but having in mind the preparatory design and the desired final effect. “

“I really like linen as a base, the colors of Liquitex are the best for me but I have used and tried many other pigments, from Ferrario, Maimeri, Corecore … I also do tests in based on the media, if I use paper or fabrics, such as example, and the quantities I need. “

“The painting proceeds by filling areas, even if there is a colored background, too in that case I consider it an area to fill. I never do the whole background, but I pass always two or three hands, I never stop at a single coat, because it would remain too transparent, not uniform. “
